World record bid to raise awareness of environmental issues

Posted onPosted on 9th Jun

A Mansfield Woodhouse man is trying to break the world record for a continuous static bike ride to raise awareness of environmental actions people can take to help the planet.

Ben Miles, who now lives in Mallorca, started his attempt under the watchful eye of Guinness World Record adjudicators on World Environment Day (5th June). He aims to finish on 17th June.

The world record bid is being made at Son Amar, a business that has taken a strong and committed approach to changing as many of its ways as possible to become an environmentally friendly and responsible company.

Ben, an extreme environmentalist who wants to create a better, greener planet, has been training for a year for this marathon event.

He is not asking for money or sponsorship, he just wants people to listen to his messages about how to improve the planet. Ben’s marathon event is being streamed live on the Son Amar Green Facebook site.

Every hour he rides Ben ‘earns’ a five-minute break to use towards time for rests and natural breaks.

His training means he can stay awake for long periods and put his body under stress.

On Monday a quarter of his challenge was completed and Ben finished the first 60 hours of riding before he took his first 90-minute sleep.

Claire Brackenbury posted on Facebook: “Ben rides to a pace of 20km an hour. Every 15 minutes he must hit 5km to be on pace. He cannot accrue distance, so it is important he stays on pace, like a metronome.

“He works to a friction level of between 25/35 (for the spinners out there) depending on what he wants to do, relieve his bottom, get rid of the aches in his legs. He can change his spinning rate to change heart rate and get him through some of the tougher times.

“He covers a minimum distance of 480km a day (298.26 miles) and over the course of the 12 days he will cover 5,760km or 3,600 miles. That is like riding from London to Dubai on a bike in 12 days!”

Ben said: “I want to say a massive and heartfelt thank you to my witnesses and my volunteers who give up their time to sit with me for either four to six hour stints through the day or my night shift who do eight hours through the night to keep me going.

“I also want to say to everyone who sends me a message that you really do help me. This is no easy challenge and you make it easier with every message and by sharing my links.”

You can watch Ben either on Facebook or on YouTube and send him a message on either.
