Headstocks event to mark 80th anniversary of VE Day

Posted onPosted on 8th Apr

The 80th anniversary of VE Day is being marked by a special event at Clipstone Headstocks.

Thursday, 8th May will be 80 years since VE (Victory in Europe) Day, when the second world war came to an end in Europe.

The event at Clipstone Headstocks will include music from the 1940s, re-enactors showing weaponry, vehicles, and dress and equipment from the era, and military displays from both world wars.

An exhibition highlights Clipstone’s role as the largest Army training camp in Britain during the first world war, accommodating more than 30,000 troops at any given time.

Running from 10am to 4pm, the anniversary commemorations on 8th May will also feature guided tours of the iconic Clipstone pit buildings and access to the Nottinghamshire Mining Heritage Centre museum and gallery. One million tons of coal were extracted beneath the world’s tallest headstocks at Clipstone.

Wartime 1940s memories will again be created at the Spirit of Wartime Sherwood event at Thoresby Park on 10th and 11th May.

A spokesperson said the nostalgic day would be filled with the sights and sounds of the era, adding: “Experience life in military camps, from the view of both Allied and Axis; see how life on the Home Front was and vehicles that would have graced our roads; and enjoy listening to songs from the 1940s sung by entertainers.”
