Children from a school in Warsop took part in a virtual camp in China.

The Key Stage Two pupils from Birklands Primary School — which is part of the Nova Education Trust — may not have been able to travel, but that didn’t stop them from meeting pupils from Cixi Qiaotou Primary School.

It was part of a special partnership between the two schools and Birklands Primary is hoping that an application for funds will support a visit to China in the future.

The children explored Chengdu — a Chinese city with a population of more than 16 million people and were able to learn about the history of China.

They had a virtual tour of Cixi Qiaotou Primary School and took part in a question and answer session with teachers and pupils.

The virtual camp also saw the youngsters learn traditional Chinese crafts, such as rubbing painting of traditional Chines architecture, practicing calligraphy, making a Chinese knot and learning Chinese Kung Fu.

They were also taught mandarin and had a virtual tour of the Chengdu Giant Panda Centre.

Birklands Year 3 pupil Hugo said he was surprised how many kings the country of China has had and he and Katy agreed that Chinese history was fascinating.

Year 4 youngster Cohen thought that learning to do a Chinese knot involved a lot of resilience and perseverance.

Lahni and Skye agreed that learning to sing in Chinese was fantastic and said the Chinese students “were very patient with us”.
