A group is appealing for volunteers to help stroke survivors on the road to recovery.
Ashfield Stroke Group, which was created in partnership with the Stroke Association and is run by volunteers, meets on the third Friday of the month, at Trinity Methodist Church and Community Centre Point, Kirkby, from 2-4pm.
Maria DeGiorgio, community development and partnership manager at the Stroke Association, said: “We have around 12 group members of different ages and backgrounds who all have one thing in common – they’re stroke survivors.
“The condition can be absolutely devastating, but with the right help and support people can make fantastic recoveries — and that’s what the group is all about.
“There is a range of activities, including speakers, exercises, outings and meals. We would love to see volunteers from the area come along and join us at our group.
“We are particularly looking for a group chairman, treasurer and secretary to join the committee.”
Maria added: “Support from Ashfield Stroke Group can make a real difference to a stroke survivor’s recovery and mental wellbeing.
“A recent report by the Nuffield Trust found that attending a Stroke Association voluntary group can help people feel less lonely and more confident after a stroke.
“Without the support of local volunteers, we couldn’t be there for people who need help through one of the most difficult and frightening periods of their lives.”
