Volunteers wanted at conservation charity

A charity that works to preserve and enhance Sherwood Forest is appealing for volunteers to further help with its tree planting and seed collecting.

Sherwood Forest Trust gets the public involved in conservation projects and educational initiatives as it strives to protect the historic forest for future generations.

Chief executive Dr Patrick Candler said: “We work with hundreds of people each year, from primary school children to local volunteers, welcoming all abilities to help look after their community green spaces.

“Our work relies on volunteers; we simply could not do what we do without them.

“Volunteering with Sherwood Forest Trust is a great way to connect with nature, meet like-minded individuals, and make a positive impact on our local environment.

“Whether you have a few hours to spare or are looking for a regular commitment, we welcome all abilities and would love your support.”

Community tree nursery officer Izzy Pass and a team of volunteers have been planting wildflowers at the Sherwood Seedbank.
Now the charity is looking forward to a busy autumn and winter as its tree planting and seed-collecting season gets under way.

Last year volunteers collected hundreds of acorns. This year they will be hunting acorns, maple, and hazel seeds in new locations.

Anyone wanting to get involved should contact Izzy, email [email protected]

The charity also aims to plant 3,500 trees at Common Lane in Mansfield Woodhouse, near Oxclose Wood, and will be restoring and maintaining heathland at Sherwood Heath, Ollerton; Oak Tree Heath, Mansfield; and Thieves Wood, near Mansfield.

Anyone wanting to get involved in these projects should contact community conservation officer Katie Doull, email [email protected]

In the summer the trust hosted two major events in Thoresby Park — the Sherwood Forest Trust Woodland Festival, celebrating the natural beauty and heritage of woodlands, and the Spirit of Wartime Sherwood event, which honoured the history and contributions of those who lived and served during the second world war.
