VE Day celebrations in Mansfield Woodhouse

Posted onPosted on 11th May

A team of volunteers helped people in Mansfield Woodhouse to enjoy the ommemorations to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The volunteers were from the Focus Point Community Support Network Team, set up by the charity the Peaceful Trust to support the community during the coronavirus crisis.

A spokesman said: “Volunteers have been out and about in Mansfield Woodhouse, supporting the most vulnerable and isolated residents in one way or another.

“We have met so many elderly residents who have their own memories of the wartime and the day the guns fell silent.

“In our team of community volunteers we have district councillors who wanted to bring an additional celebration to this special day, with some additional nostalgia.”

It included the delivery of afternoon teas by volunteers wearing 1940s-style dress wear, and music played by the Mansfield Corps of Drums, who marched in front of residents on Champion Crescent following a two-minutes’ silence.

The afternoon teas included beef dripping sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, Victoria sponge cake, chocolate and lemonade — paid for by councillors Marion Bradshaw, Craig Whitby and John Coxhead.

All three councillors then attended events in Yeoman Hill Ward, dropping off at the Elizabeth House Care Home, before going on to Manor Ward where residents were also given afternoon teas.

The spokesman added: “On behalf of the Peaceful Trust and Focus Point Community Support Network, we would like to say thank you for all the support, past present and future, and look forward to continuing our engagement in our beautiful community.”
