More than £1,500 raised at a fundraising festive fayre, organised by childcare students from West Nottinghamshire College, has been presented to King’s Mill Hospital.
The festive event, attended by staff and students, was hosted by education and education and early years students, who sold books, handmade gifts, Christmas decorations, cards, and jewellery, and also ran a prize raffle and game challenges.
Among those at the fayre was Julia Yemm, consultant radiographer in breast imaging at the Sutton hospital, and the wife of Mansfield MP Steve Yemm.
A cheque for £1,574.21 was presented to Sherwood Forest Hospitals Charity for use in breast care services by some of the early years students, together with their teacher, Susan Swinscoe.
They visited community involvement co-ordinator Joy Wilson in the hospital’s community hub, where they were joined by consultant breast surgeon Dr Ghassan Elamin and breast care support worker Charlotte Batty.
Learners received a certificate of appreciation and thanks from Dr Elamin, who said: “You can’t imagine what a huge difference this donation will make.
“Patients often come to us scared and broken when they have received bad news about their health, but when they come to the clinic for their treatment, they get comfort and support too.
“We get great satisfaction in seeing our patients improve on their health journey and rebuild their lives. Your money will go towards making the clinic a more comfortable place for their recovery and emotional support.”
Joy took the visitors on a tour of the Breast Care Unit and showed them the recently-renovated Amazon Lounge, as well as some of the comfort aids used by patients who have undergone surgery.
They also looked at display boards that show how other organisations fundraise for the unit and where the money goes.
Sue said: “Our students have worked tirelessly to raise funds for the breast care unit. The visit opened their eyes to the pivotal role fundraising plays.
“Witnessing the impact of their efforts has been an invaluable experience for them, reinforcing the importance of giving back to the community.”
