New role marks 75 years at Sherwood Colliery Cricket Club

Sherwood Colliery Cricket Club has appointed John Florence as honorary president — marking his 75 years at the club.

John began his cricketing journey with Sherwood Colliery in 1950 aged 16, a year before the club moved to its current home at Debdale Park Sports Club.

During his playing days, John captained the second team and remained a vital member of the club until he hung up his bowling boots in 1991.

Following his playing career, John continued to contribute in various capacities — committee member, club secretary, treasurer and chairman.

After retiring from active roles in 2014, John has remained part of the club’s community, which includes his grandson, who is a player, and other family members who volunteer.

John said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my long association with the cricket club. It is nice to see it showing signs of recovery and progress, both on and off the field.

“I am honoured to take on this new role and look forward to seeing the club continue to grow and thrive, especially with the next generation of players and volunteers leading the way.”

The club is also celebrating the success of its first and second teams, both of which were promoted last season, and is on the lookout for new players.
