Lord’s triumph for Cuckney CC

Cuckney Cricket Club claimed a remarkable last-ball win to lift the prestigious ECB National Clubs Championship at the home of cricket.

They defeated Bexley by having lost fewer wickets, after the two sides were tied on 219 at Lord’s.

Cuckney needed two runs off the last ball to tie and win the game on wickets lost in front of more than 500 travelling supporters.

Bexley were 23-2 after being put in, before a third-wicket stand of 84 between Calum Basey (78) and George Haley (23). Matthew Stiddard then made 59 not out and Harry Turner 29 as Bexley totalled 219 for 9 from their 40 overs.

Joe Worrall, with 3 for 30, was the leading wicket-taker for Cuckney.

In reply Cuckney lost Tom Rowe without scoring, after he had struck three centuries in previous rounds.

However, William Butler (69) and Nick Langford (59) combined for a vital third-wicket stand of 105.

Nick Keast hit a quickfire 36 and captain Tom Ullyott struck two runs off the last ball to clinch victory and finish unbeaten on 26.Cuckney totalled 219 for 5, so lost four fewer wickets.

Talking about the last ball drama, Tom said: “They changed their field and took a bit of time. I decided the biggest gap was over the bowler’s head and I was going to chip it over him.

“As soon as I hit it quite well I knew it would be at least two.”

A week later Cuckney won the Notts Premier League for the first time since 2017 to make it a trophy treble, having earlier lifted The Derbyshire Cup.
