Social hub for adults with learning disabilities launched

Posted onPosted on 17th Nov

A club that offers support to adults with learning disabilities has opened a social hub in Nether Langwith.

The hub helps to improve members’ lifeskills, join in activities, go on day trips and weekends away, and much more.

Now the charity behind the social hub — one of four in Derbyshire — wants to make more people aware of its services.

Just Good Friends Club aims to provide a safe environment for members, offering them a voice and a choice while increasing opportunities to socialise and build friendships in a club that is affordable to all.

The charity was formed in 1997 after an advocacy group of adults with learning disabilities formed an evening group for socialising — and there are now five evening groups in North East Derbyshire.

Just Good Friends Club opened its first social hub in Clowne, in 2021. It now supports 82 members and has four social hubs in Ripley, Coal Aston, Clowne, and now Nether Langwith.

Project development co-ordinator Marc Wade said: “In our social hubs we support our members to practise transferrable skills, such as travel training, shopping and budgeting, and cooking a meal for themselves.

“We encourage them to participate in activities and hobbies, such as chair-based exercises, sports and games, and gardening.

“We organise day trips and weekends away. We also have a nightclub event in Chesterfield once a month, which is open to all adults with learning disabilities and their carers, whether they are our members or not.”

The social hub in Nether Langwith meets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 10am to 3pm. Members asked to take their own lunch and it costs £40 per day.
