Sleep-out help for homeless

More proceeds from a winter sleep-out by Kirkby Rotary Club and Ashwood Church in the town have been presented to the Mansfield Winter Shelter Project.

Immediate past-president Roger Pursey gave the sponsorship donations to Hannah Buck, shelter co-ordinator, when she gave a talk to the rotary club.

Fundraisers spent a night sleeping rough in the new Kirkby town centre plaza with only cardboard boxes, plastic sheets and sleeping bags to keep them warm.

Among the volunteer sleepers were Rotarian Pam Thompson and Carol Hallam, Ashfield District Council community wellbeing team leader, who were at the cheque presentation.

The shelter, based in Mansfield’s Baptist Church, Rosemary Street, gives support to the homeless during the winter.

Run by a paid co-ordinator and 30 volunteers, it has accommodation for 12 people, and provides free meals, hot drinks and sleeping bags on three nights every weekend during winter.

The amount raised through the sleep-out has topped £3,000.

Hannah said: “There is no other shelter open in Mansfield over the weekend and this will help us to continue our work.”

Roger said: “It was rewarding to co-operate with Ashwood Church and Ashfield District Council on this project.”
