Shortlisted for top housing award

Mansfield District Council has been shortlisted for a prestigious housing award.

The authority is in the last six in the outstanding local authority category at the Chartered Institute of Housing UK Housing Awards.

The category, open to any local authority, recognises the role of councils in shaping local housing markets — through regeneration or development, meeting local housing need and/or preventing homelessness.

In its application, the council cited its current house-building programme, which is partially completed.

It consists of 171 new homes with 83 due in 2015/16, 34 in 2016/17 and 54 in 2017/18.

Most of the programme is to build housing for older people, which could enable council tenants to downsize and free-up under-occupied larger houses for families on the council waiting list.

The council’s housing vision has also involved buying five long-term empty properties from the private sector to rent out and, in one case, sell in a shared ownership scheme.

Mayor Kate Allsop said: “Being shortlisted for this award is fantastic news in recognising the great work that Mansfield District Council is doing to meet the urgent need for more homes in this district.

“As a housing authority we have taken a brave, resourceful and innovative approach to providing more housing for all kinds of demographic groups in the area, including older people, residents with special needs and families.

“Our development schemes have meant that for the first time in more than 30 years we have been building new properties for the people of this district. That is a worthy achievement and we are proud of it.”
