Sherwood Forest eyes landscape heritage fund

Community groups and voluntary organisations with an interest in conserving and celebrating the natural and cultural heritage of the wider Sherwood Forest are being invited to register their details by taking part in a survey.

Nottinghamshire County Council led a successful bid with partners from the heritage, conservation and community sectors to the Heritage Lottery Fund last year for £119,000 to develop the Miner to Major Landscape Partnership Scheme for Sherwood Forest.

As the scheme’s partners now begin work on a more detailed submission to the Heritage Lottery Fund, they want to ensure that everyone with an interest in Sherwood Forest has the opportunity to get involved.

Local groups are asked to respond by November 30 through an online survey, which has been set up to collect short information about their distribution and interests. Find out more here: www.surveymonkey.com/r/sherwood-forest-regional-park

Councillor John Knight, Committee Chairman for Culture, at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Together with our partners, we were delighted to secure some preliminary funding and in the coming months we will begin work on the next stage of the project to seek further funds. Engaging with as many people as possible with a real interest and connection to the wider Sherwood Forest will make our case even more powerful.”

The Miner to Major Landscape Partnership Scheme aims to reflect the diverse heritage of the area, which encompasses coal mining and internationally important wildlife, as well as the legendary Robin Hood.

The scheme also supports the vision of Sherwood Forest Regional Park, which wants to create a future where the area’s outstanding natural and cultural heritage is locally, nationally and internationally recognised and where vibrant communities, economic regeneration and environmental enhancement thrive together in this inspiring natural setting.
