Sculpture tribute to one of Mansfield’s music heroes

Posted onPosted on 10th Nov

A sculpture of glam rock star Alvin Stardust has been unveiled in Mansfield Palace Theatre, where he first performed in pantomime at the age of eight.

Alvin, whose real name was Bernard Jewry and who also found music fame as Shane Fenton, had 11 top-40 chart hits in the 1970s and 1980s, including number one Jealous Mind in 1974.

Jane Wood, the daughter of his cousin, helped to organise funding for the sculpture, which was created by Cypriot sculptor Elina Hadjinicola.

Jane said: “The theatre is where he started his career and it’s where he will stay.”

The launch of the statue was attended by family members, including two of Alvin’s children, Millie Jewry and Shaun Fenton.

Alvin, who died in 2014, was born in London in 1942. He moved to Mansfield as a child, where his mother ran a boarding house used by musicians and entertainers appearing locally. As a young boy he attended what is now The Minster School, Southwell.
