School wins award for its wildlife work

Samworth Church Academy has won a Wildlife On Your Doorstep award from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust.

The trust praised the Mansfield academy for protecting the county’s wildlife at an awards ceremony at Bridge Street Methodist Church, Mansfield.

A trust spokesperson said, “The school was recognised for its unique annual Making A Difference Day (MAD).

“Each year the entire school of 800 students, plus staff, set aside a full day for working with nature groups, including the Forest Town Nature Conservation Group, the Forestry Commission and Sherwood Forest Trust.

“They have helped out with balsam and bracken management on several sites across Sherwood Forest, including Spa Ponds Nature Reserve.

“The philosophy behind this initiative is based on the idea that charity is about more than giving money, it is about demonstrating a personal commitment to a cause — and in this case the cause is nature conservation volunteering.”

Erin McDaid, head of communications at the trust, said they were impressed with the scale and ambition of the project.
Ian James who organises the event, collected the award on behalf of Samworth.

“With the help of the academy’s wonderful staff and students, it has been possible to make a real difference in our community and we will continue to carry out our work in the future. A big thank you to everyone,” he said.
