School needs Tesco shoppers’ help

Mansfield’s Abbey Primary School has appealed to Tesco shoppers for their help after it was chosen to receive a grant of up to £12,000 for an environmental project at its new home, where it will be moving in April.

It is one of three shortlisted schemes for the Tesco Bags Of Help initiative.

Customers are being asked to vote for their favourite to determine how much is given to each project — £8,000, £10,000 or £12,000.

Votes can be made at Tesco stores — at Oak Tree Lane and Chesterfield Road in Mansfield, and at the Pleasley Express store — between Saturday, 27th February and Sunday, 6th March.

Shoppers will be given a token as they go through the tills to put in a voting box.

The school wants to develop raised beds with colourful plants, plant fruit and native trees. install bird/bat boxes and outdoor seating, and develop colourful outdoor mosaic artwork.

The money has come from the 5p carrier bag charge introduced in October.

Head Kim Wakefield, said: “We are very, very pleased to have been shortlisted for the Bags of Help grant. Whilst we will have a brand new school building the playgrounds are bare. Playtimes are a really important part of the school day for our children.

“I would like to encourage all local people to support our school and vote for us.

“I am looking forward to hearing about the result. It will give a great opportunity for our children to get involved with developing the project further, if we secure the maximum grant.”
