Abbey Primary School’s move to a new home in Mansfield has inspired a heritage project.
Looking Forwards, By Looking Back has won a £59,100 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The school moved a short distance from its Abbey Road home to a new base on the old Sherwood Hall School site at Stuart Avenue. Forest Town, in April.
The school entrance includes an old wall that was part of the former Sherwood Hall, a large home that was demolished around 1967.
Working with Forest Town Heritage Group and Forest Town Women’s Institute, the school wants to celebrate its new location by investigating its past.
A heritage garden will be designed, created and used by children and volunteers.
The project, which will run until the end of 2017, will give pupils the chance to discover the origins of Sherwood Hall and to learn about other local outdoor areas such as Clumber Park, as well as create the heritage garden.with a community gardener.
Head Kim Wakefield said: “We are confident the project will support our children to work alongside local people and groups to take pride in the heritage of our new school and create a wonderful garden.”
