Saturday job led to 40-year career

Posted onPosted on 29th Jun

When Saturday boy Paul Sanderson started sweeping up hair off the floor at a barbers shop in Mansfield, he enjoyed the tasks he was given, and the fact he was earning a few pennies.

Fast forward 40 years and thousands of haircuts, and Paul has owned the shop, Campions, on Church Street, since 2000.

Eight people work at the premises, including Jo Parkes (36), who is also celebrating a milestone.

Jo, a mum of two, also started at the shop as a Saturday helper and is now celebrating 20 years there.

Paul said: “I love what I do. I did the Saturday job and stayed on, taking over in 2000.

There must have been thousands of haircuts I’ve done over the years, some of which I’ve liked doing, others not so much — like the trend for curtains.

“Jo (receptionist) is a real asset as she is great with the customers.

“There are a lot of hairdressers in Mansfield, but we continue to get new customers and we have a lot of regulars too.”

Retired teacher Terry Holt (81), who has been using Campions for around 25 years, said: “It’s a good place to come to. The staff are warm and friendly, and you get a good haircut too.”
