Posted onPosted on 12th Nov

It is the time of year when those looking to enter post 16 education start scouting out their local sixth forms to see which is offering the courses they prefer.

Those students wishing to pursue performing arts, and particularly A-Level music, alongside dance and drama courses, could visit Samworth Church Academy on Sherwood Hall Road, Mansfield.

Sixth form learning manager Alison Pass explained: “We are offering A-level music now, as well as dance and drama courses and would welcome interest from students wishing to pursue these creative subjects. It’s easy to find the information needed to apply, and those interested should contact the school office who will help them to access the course they need.”

The courses on offer are A Level Drama and Theatre Studies, A Level Dance, A Level Music and Btec Level 3 National Diploma in Performing Arts.

Team leader of performing arts Caroline Ashley said: “We have a dedicated, passionate team who strive to enhance the cultural experiences of all young people and students who join us will receive a first class education in a department that has achieved above National Average results year on year.”

The Performing Arts faculty offers a range of opportunities both in and out of the academy and students are encouraged to take part in the academy’s annual production as a performer, musician, dancer or technical support.

“We also run a performing arts trip abroad every summer.” said Caroline. “Students perform at a range of venues across Europe, theatre trips, workshops with external visitors, a Dance Showcase event, Easter and Christmas events and many more!”

Caroline says that students can specialise in costume, set design, lighting or sound as part of the A-level drama course should they wish.

“Our current Performing Arts alumni include two students who are studying drama at Gordonstoun school as part of a scholarship, a student at Performers College and another student studying dance at LIPA.”

Caroline says that students studying Teaching, Law, Psychology and Sports degrees are reporting they found an Arts A level was useful in their interview processes and application letters.

Nicholas Dilkes, team leader of music, said to study A-level music, students should have a GCSE in music and be able to play an instrument to grade 5 standard or equivalent.
