Room for girl’s tale in hotel storybook

Posted onPosted on 26th Mar

Eleven-year-old Mansfield schoolgirl Ruby Oxland is the finalist in a nationwide writing competition.

And already her entry will feature in a bedtime children’s storybook to be made available to a hotel chain’s guests.

Her story, Room 32, is a 300-word creative bedtime story that tells the tale of magical night in Room 32.

It was written for the Hallmark Hotels Storytelling campaign, which launched in January and saw entries from across the UK. Shortlisted stories, like Ruby’s, will be included in a bedtime storybook, intended to help families bring comfort and routine to their little ones while staying at a Hallmark Hotel.

The judging process was led by author and CBBC Teletubbies scriptwriter Gordon Volke, who said Room 32 would make a “fantastic addition” to the storybook, which will be made available for guests to borrow in all Hallmark Hotels later this year.

Commenting on the merits of Ruby’s story, Gordon said: “Ruby’s tale showcased that she’s a brilliant writer.

“It grabbed my attention from the very first line. It was such a gripping story with a great twist at the end. She is a worthy author for the bedtime storybook and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.”

Ruby said: “I feel amazing that I have been chosen to be shortlisted.

“I am super grateful and honoured that I have a chance of winning the Hallmark Hotels competition.”

As an accredited author of the bedtime storybook Ruby will also receive her own copy.

Age-group category winners are due to be announced, spend an afternoon at a Hallmark Hotel and sit down with illustrator, Julian Stelfox, where they will help design illustrations that will appear alongside their story in the final book.

Winners will also receive £50-worth of Waterstones vouchers and a one-night stay at a Hallmark Hotel for all the family.

Donald Stewart, general manager at Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland said: “We’ve had such a fantastic response. It’s great to see so many budding young writers putting pen to paper and sharing their creative stories. It’s great to know that someone from the region has made the cut and we’ll be sure to point out their story to all our younger guests who stay with us at the hotel in the future.”
