Railway art project in Mansfield

Posted onPosted on 9th Jan

First Art has partnered with Robin Hood Line Community Rail Partnership and Sutton Road Primary School, Mansfield, to deliver a new project that hopes to breathe new life into Mansfield Railway Station.

The community-based initiative will see a permanent art piece installed in a public underpass and the platform areas at the station.

Organisers said: “In revitalising these areas, we want to be as creative as possible to make them more welcoming and (for people) to feel safer, in turn encouraging people to use the areas.

“We are keen to brighten up the underpass through the use of colour and any appropriate visual art medium. The selected artwork will then also be replicated on a series of Perspex panels that line the two platforms.

“We want local young people to be involved in the process to help ensure the community shapes, takes ownership, and safeguards the endurance of the artworks.

The selected artist(s) will work in partnership with First Art, Robin Hood Line Community Rail Partnership, and Sutton Road Primary School.

The project is looking for an artist or arts organisation, experienced in delivering public art projects, to design and create the piece.

A key part of this project is working with the local community, in particular Sutton Road Primary School. Year 5 students will be involved throughout the interview and design stages of the commission.

The artist(s) will need to deliver a series of workshops at the school to consult and engage with the students.

Expressions of interest are welcomed from all visual art disciplines and must be received by 12noon, on Friday, 20th January.
