Seven-year-old Rachel Candlin, of Mansfield Woodhouse, is celebrating after winning a national competition organised to coincide with the launch of the audio book, Kid Normal And The Shadow Machine.

Entrants had to draw a new super hero or super villain that the authors, Greg James and Chris Smith, could write a story about.

Rachel, (above) a pupil at Farmilo School, Pleasley, created The Evil Pepper Queen.

The authors said: “We love her! She looks so mean and scary and we’re looking forward to cooking up a spicy story about her.”

Once the story was finished it was recorded on to a bespoke copy of Kid Normal And The Shadow Machine especially for Rachel. She also received copies of the first two Kid Normal audio CDs.

W.F. Howes, the publishers, were so impressed by the standard of the entries that they gave extra runners-up prizes, but Rachel was the overall winner.
