Putting dementia to bed!

Posted onPosted on 18th Mar

Hundreds of walkers shined a light on dementia after dark as they joined an event for the first time in Nottingham.

Fundraisers put their best foot forward at Nottingham’s Racecourse  for Alzheimer’s Society’s GLOW Walk.

Lit up in neon glow sticks, paint and glitter every step helped to raise funds and awareness to support more than 12,700 people living with dementia across Nottinghamshire.

Joshua Lashbrook, event fundraising officer at Alzheimer’s Society and organiser of the walk on the night, said: “I want to say a huge thanks to everyone who has taken a step towards creating a brighter future for people with dementia and helped to make our first GLOW event in Nottingham a brilliant success.

“We had a great night. People of all generations were in high spirits and were entertained with a Zumba warm up and a rock choir as they walked.

“We couldn’t have done this event without our amazing volunteers who helped out in all kinds of ways from cheering on participants to signposting and marshalling. They really helped to make it a success.”

Walkers completed a 5km route around the Racecourse, receiving a participation medal once crossing the finish line.

Joshua said: “Fundraisers stepped out to stop dementia in its tracks after a devastating period for those living with the disease.

“Nobody should have to face dementia alone without adequate support, and it is only with the generous help of our fundraisers that Alzheimer’s Society can carry out its urgent work to be there for those who need it most.

“Every pound raised through GLOW will help Alzheimer’s Society provide vital information and support, improve care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by the condition.”

People with dementia have been worst hit during Covid 19 and Alzheimer’s Society’s services, including the Dementia Connect support line, have been used more than six million times since the start of the pandemic.
