Ashfield District Council has celebrated the first council house ever built in the district with its very own blue plaque.

Records show that a property on Moorland Close, Sutton, was the first council house to be built in Ashfield in 1922.

The plaque marks 100 years since the Addison Act was introduced to meet the huge demand for working-class housing following the end of the first world war.

The plaque is one of a number of ways Ashfield has marked the centenary year of council housing, including a new street sign on Addison Drive, Hucknall, and mapping property building throughout the decades.

Coun Jason Zadrozny, leader of the council, said: “This plaque is significant as it marks a century of providing good homes for people and families to live good lives.”

“In Ashfield, we were recently named the number one local authority landlord in the UK but we are by no means complacent.

“We recently added nine new properties to our housing portfolio in Hucknall and we are building more than 20 new homes on Davies Avenue in Sutton.

“We also have plans to build or acquire around 100 more properties within our term.”
