Sutton Community Academy Year 12 student Waqas Parvaiz has won the regional Schools Physicist of the Year Award.
The award is organised by the University of Nottingham and The Ogden Trust, which recognises the most promising Year 12 A-Level physics students from all secondary schools and sixth-form colleges in the area.
Waqas was nominated by physics teacher Neil Groves, who described him as a more than capable physicist, and the go-to guy for assisting his peers.
Waqas, pictured with Mr Groves, left, and academy principal Tim Croft, is the third student in four years from the academy to win the award.
Receiving his award in a ceremony at the University of Nottingham, Waqas won £25-worth of book tokens, a scientific measuring instrument, a certificate and the right to claim a bursary of £1,500 from The Ogden Trust towards the costs of studying physics at University.
Mr Croft said: “I am proud of Waqas and this fantastic achievement. In a world where physics teachers are like gold dust, it is great that our science department are inspiring the next generation of physicists.”
Waqas is attending the University of Nottingham’s summer school.
