People from Mansfield and Edwinstowe were among the winners in a photography competition run by Newark and Sherwood District Council.

The contest, which aimed to get photographers out and about in the district to capture the best of what it has to offer, attracted almost 250 entries.

There were two categories in the open entry group. The first was Nature and Rural with the winner David Fargher, of Newark, who impressed with a range of images depicting countryside and nature.
Highly commended were Karen Calladine, of Mansfield, and Steve Brammer.

In the Industrial and Architecture open category, Adam Paterson, of Newark, was named winner.

The under-18 winner was 12-year-old Woody Wilkinson, of Southwell. Highly commended was Noah Steadman (11), of Newark. Runner-up awards were presented to Evelyn Spencer (16) and 14-year-old Amy Cary, of Edwinstowe.

Judges included Coun Rowan Cozens, deputy leader of the district council, and Tom Martin, photography lecturer at Lincoln University.

Rowan said: “All the photographs we received encapsulated our feelings about the wonderful area that we live in, without the need for any words at all.

“We know from speaking to our residents how much pride they have in the places that they live, and this was clearly reflected in the submissions.

“We received photographs taken by those on dog walks, on a ramble, visiting our historical buildings, out with children, shopping in our town centres, and many more.

“I believe that an image paints a thousand words and with technology as it is, it’s easy to pick up a phone, or camera if you have one, and capture memories that will last a lifetime.”

The two winners of the open categories received £100 while the two under 18 winners will each receive £50. The further two runners up will receive prizes of £20.

The winning images are now on display at the council’s Castle House headquarters in Newark.
