Pencil cases reach Kenyan children

Pencil cases donated by the students and staff of The Beech Academy have reached the Ungana Academy in Kenya.

Edward Mawson, from Teachers UK, told the school he would be visiting Kenya to do some voluntary work alongside the Derby County Community Trust.

Mr Butler, deputy head at The Beech Academy, suggested students and staff send pencil cases rather than donate money.

Working together, students and staff filled more than 70 pencil cases, which were presented to Edward before his trip.

Mr Mawson said: “The Kenyan children were delighted with the pencil cases. I was thrilled to share photos, videos and stories about my trip with the Beech students.

“They were taken back by the size of classes in Kenya and how they and were taught in conditions that are quite different to UK classrooms.”
