Park life for Berry Hill youngsters

Mansfield’s Berry Hill Prim-ary School youngsters visited King George V Park in the town to help sow a wildflower meadow.

Year 1 classes walked to the park, which is close to the school, listened to bird song, saw bees and butterflies, and a range of birds.

The park’s meadow had become dominated by certain plants over the past two years and Mansfield District Council wanted to improve the range of species growing there.

The children helped to sow seeds to improve the diversity of plants.

They also sketched the different things they saw to help develop their learning about a topic, Signs Of Spring.

The school has worked with the council over recent years on bulb and tree planting, designing a wood carving and planting a 38-tree orchard.

Kate Miller, Year 1 teache, said: “The offer of sowing wildflower meadow seed was an ideal opportunity to visit the park and look for signs of spring.

“The children sketched lots of leaves, plants and birds.

“We plan to return when the wildflower meadow is grown and in flower. This will help the children understand the impact of their positive actions in their local community.”
