Ofsted inspectors praise enjoyable experiences at academy

Ofsted inspectors have rated Leamington Primary and Nursery Academy, Sutton, as good in all areas.

Talking about children’s experience of attending the school, inspectors said: “Leaders believe in the pupils of Leamington. They do all they can to help pupils achieve their dreams and ambitions.

“Pupils are proud of their achievements and their school. They work hard and want to get even better.

“Pupils know that staff give them the highest levels of care. The whole school community works together to give pupils new and enjoyable experiences.

“They want Leamington to be ‘the best school in the universe’.”

Pupils were praised in the report for behaving well and being polite, friendly and caring, telling inspectors they ‘just love coming to school’.

Inspectors said they get off to a flying start in the early years provision.

Staff were recognised for providing high quality teaching and for delivering interesting and exciting lessons.

Extra opportunities for children to learn were highlighted, including after-school clubs; developing a strong community relationship with a care home where children engage with older generations; and also for visits to the National Space Centre, Magna and Hardwick Hall.

The school is part of the Flying High Trust and inspectors said the school’s senior leaders, together with the trust, have transformed the quality of education that pupils receive, adding: “Pupils’ achievement has never been better.”

Head teacher Kaye McGuire said the report’s acknowledgment that staff want to unlock children’s potential would mean a great deal to staff.

“Leamington has been on a real journey in the last few years. The Flying High Trust have helped us to improve and provide the best we can for the children in our care,” she said.

“Leamington is a community that is thriving and growing and the children in our school are fantastic.

“The staff have worked incredibly hard and it is nice to receive the recognition that is deserved. Leamington will continue to improve, and our children will achieve their potential.”

The report said the school has an effective English curriculum and that teachers deliver high-quality phonics lessons, adding: “Pupils hang on every word. Teachers work hard to build pupils’ vocabulary.”

Inspectors highlighted that the school strongly promotes reading and, in geography and mathematics, children’s work is of a high standard and they achieve well.

The school’s provision for special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) was rated ‘highly effective’ saying that teachers’ planning of help and support is at the correct level and that “pupils with SEND catch up.”

Inspectors added: “Senior leaders, the trust and local governors are an effective team. They care about staff. They make sure that staff workload is manageable. Staff are proud to work at the school. Staff morale is very high.”

Chris Wheatley, chief executive of the Flying High Trust, added: “Leamington is a shining example of what we set out to achieve as a trust from our inception — to raise aspirations and create social mobility within communities, and for children to be able to achieve their full potential regardless of background or barrier.

“We are firm in our mission that wherever there is a Flying High Trust School that these ideals will become a reality.

“Leamington’s achievements are an example of those ideals being realised; they are well deserved and of inestimable value to the children who attend the school now, and for future generations of pupils.”
