Newark and Sherwood District Proclamation

Posted onPosted on 11th Sep

The Newark and Sherwood District Proclamation took place at Castle House in Newark.  This follows the national Proclamation from St James’ Palace, which took place on Saturday, and the Nottinghamshire County Proclamation, which took place earlier today.

Coun Sue Saddington, chairman of Newark and Sherwood District Council, read the official Proclamation and was joined on stage by Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew Pulford, Deputy Lieutenant, and Coun David Lloyd, council leader.

Coun Saddington said: “I was honoured to deliver the Newark and Sherwood Proclamation of the Accession of His Majesty King Charles III at Castle House this afternoon to official dignitaries and residents.

“The sadness felt by our residents at the passing of our late Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II, is shared by people across the globe. While we remember the lifetime of devoted service and duty given by our longest reigning Monarch, today’s ceremony also marked the formal Proclamation to the people of the Newark and Sherwood district to mark the beginning of our new King’s reign.

“God Save The King.”

The Proclamation of the new Sovereign is a very old tradition that can be traced back over many centuries.  The ceremony does not create a new King, moreover it is an announcement of the Accession that took place immediately after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.  A copy of the Newark and Sherwood District Proclamation is available on the district council website.

Later on Sunday, Town Council Proclamations also took place around the district. The current period of National Mourning will end after the funeral of our Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II, on Monday 19 September.  This day has been declared a Bank Holiday and further information is available on the Government website about this.
