New look for pub

A Mansfield pub is rebranding itself for the first time since around 1900.

The Bowl in Hand, Leeming Street, has undergone a revamp, with new signs, window frame colours, and a resurfaced outdoor area at the back, complete with innovative sail-design canopy.

As part of the refurbishment, the pub will be renamed The Bowl.

Landlord Martin Wilson said: “This will be the first time in a number of years that the external parts of the pub have been refurbished, after we did the interior when I took over a couple of years ago.

“The pub dates back to the 1750s, when it was called The Bowling Green Inn. We still have the bowling green of course, but many of our regulars call us The Bowl anyway so it seemed right to change the name.

“You can’t please everyone, but we think it will be a fantastic way of keeping our traditional ethos and bring the venue into the modern times.”

Martin’s partner is Sharon Martin, the daughter of Alf and Jenny Martin, who ran the pub for around 21 years. Sharon’s brother, Shane, runs the pub on a day-to-day basis.
