A new museum is opening in Clipstone Headstocks as the former colliery site takes another step forward as a leisure attraction.
Clipstone Headstocks Museum, which will be operated by Nottinghamshire Mining Heritage Centre, aims to celebrate the area’s rich industrial heritage.
Among the subjects of displays are Raleigh bicycles, the first world war Clipstone Camp, motorcycling’s British Speed Trials, and Robin Hood, together with mining memorabilia.
Stuart Mills, director of the heritage centre, said they were looking forward to welcoming visitors to the historic and educational experience centre every Friday, from 14th March until 26th September.
“Military is a very important part of Clipstone’s history, from Clipstone Camp in the first world war when over 30,000 troops were stationed here, before it then became a colliery.”
Guided tours will be available every Friday from 14th March with the project being run by volunteers.
All monies raised will go direct to buying materials for the continual restoration of the headstock buildings.
Booking is not necessary for the tours, which start at 11am. Admission is from £8 per person, £4 for under-10s. For school trips there is a concessionary rate of £5 per person.
Group bookings are also welcome, with dates available on request.
Stuart said the museum wuld be ideal for educational school trips, youth groups, clubs, corporate events, and more.
As well as the industrial and mining heritage museum, the iconic buildings have already hosted concerts, shows, and events.
Future events include an Easter Family Fun Day, on Monday, 21st April, featuring characters appearances by Bluey and Peter Rabbit, rides, games, indoor crafts; and Clipstone At War, on 18th and 20th July, featuring vintage vehicles, military re-enactments, period entertainers, vintage vehicles, living history groups, and more.
