Museum appeals for more volunteers

Mansfield Museum is calling for volunteers to help make its collections more accessible to the public.

A Heritage Lottery-funded project has enabled the museum to display artefacts of historical interest.

The most recent exhibition, which was opened in autumn 2014, is dedicated to the history of local industry. Now the exhibition needs to be digitally catalogued so that people across the globe can view photographs and read about items in the museum’s collections.

The photographing, scanning and transcribing of objects is just one area where staff at the museum need help. They are also looking for assistance in outreach projects, visitor surveys, and pop-up exhibitions.

Sally Evans, community participation officer, said: “It’s an enormous project and one that wouldn’t be possible without volunteer help. We’re also expanding our outreach capabilities, visiting care homes and other community groups to take the museum out of the building, so there are lots of interesting areas where people can get involved.”

There are various volunteer positions available throughout the year. Anyone interested in joining the team can collect an information pack from the museum shop or download one at www.mansfield.gov.uk/museum/volunteers
