Mum and daughter to share catwalk at beauty pageant

A Mansfield mum who watched her daughter successfully compete in beauty pageants says she has now been inspired to take part herself.

Glam mum Helen Adkin, 56, decided to follow in her 21-year-old Chloe Adkin’s footsteps and enter Mrs Galaxy UK pageant after encouragement from friends and family.

The pair proved they share good genes after Chloe won Miss Nottingham Galaxy and Helen won Mrs Nottingham Galaxy, providing them both with a place at the finals of the UK Galaxy pageants in November.

Helen will compete in the Mrs category and Chloe in the Miss.

Chloe, also of Mansfield, has entered pageants since she was 15 and is proud of her mum for finally taking the plunge to also compete.

She revealed that she fell into the pageanting scene as a bit of fun after finishing third at the 2015 Miss Mansfield Outstanding Teen competition and never expected it to turn into such a full-time hobby. In 2018, Chloe reached the top 20 at Miss England.

“Each year I dedicate myself to various charity organisations and local businesses to improve and support my local community,” she said.

“Although Covid has made it difficult this past year, I have still managed to raise £1,383 for my chosen charity, the British Heart Foundation, and UK Galaxy Pageant’s chosen charity, The Christie.”

Chloe added that her mother, who is also raising money for The Christie, had always supported her, before finally deciding to take to the catwalk after being inspired by other older contestants.

Helen said competing has given her a new lease of life. “Chloe competed for the first time six years ago and I’ve always been very supportive of her,” she said.

“She’s been very much an inspiration to me because I’ve seen how it has changed her life and given here a huge confidence boost.”

Helen said that competing she hopes to dissuade certain stereotypes that are often associated with beauty pageants. “The whole UK pageant community is desperate to change society’s perception of pageants —- we do so much good work that goes unnoticed,” she added.

“The experience so far has taught me how to be more confident, compassionate and charitable.

“It has allowed me to become a role model to other women and encourage them that life doesn’t stop after 50. Beauty has no age or size limit — there is room for everyone.”

Helen said competing has not only given her a confidence boost, it has even improved the mother/daughter relationship.

“Competing together has really changed us as a family as well,” she added.

“We’ve always been close but this has brought us even closer together. We spend most evening and weekends attending events and organising charity fundraisers, it’s been great fun and a distraction from the pandemic.’

If Helen and Chloe win they’ll be whisked off to compete in the USA at the Galaxy International competition in 2022.

The duo said they were grateful to be sponsored by local businesses, including PA, lighting and staging company MC Productions, Mansfield beauty salon Lucy Lashes, and Richard Murrill Pageant Sponsorship.
