Ashfield MP Lee Anderson has pledged to give every penny of an expected pay rise to worthwhile causes in his constituency.
On Friday it was reported that MPs could receive a pay rise of over £3,000 a year from next April under new proposals from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.
But some MPs have expressed unease about being awarded a pay rise at a time when many of their constituents are facing economic uncertainty.
Lee explained: “It is a huge honour to be the MP for Ashfield and Eastwood. While ever people want me as their MP, I will not be keeping this pay rise or any other, should they be awarded in the future.
“There are people out there who would benefit more from this money – be it sports clubs, veterans or community groups. This is a personal decision I have made. I love doing what I do and this money will help me make Ashfield a better place.”
Writing on Facebook the MP added: “Since being elected last December I have given away nearly £5,000, which after tax is all of this year’s pay rise and most of next year’s.
“Whilst ever I am the MP I will continue to donate part of my pay to good causes every month.
“Finally, MPs do not have a say or a vote on their pay and if we did I would vote against a pay rise during these difficult times, that is why I give mine away.”
