MP recognises work of Kirkby volunteer

Posted onPosted on 12th Jul

A popular Kirkby volunteer has received an award from Ashfield MP Lee Anderson.

Sally Anne Kent received his Resident of the Month accolade after being nominated by the Our Centre charity.

It said Sally, a volunteer there for 25 years, has immersed herself in everything from making drinks to organising a Christmas pantomime.

Sally has Down’s syndrome and struggles to understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods, and how they can affect you.

Despite this she has lost more than four stones after joining Weight Watchers.

She has increased her daily intake of fruit and vegetables and, thanks to reaching her chosen target weight, can now enjoy longer walks and playing sports, such as boccia and cricket.

The monthly award was launched in 2021 after the MP was inspired by the story of courageous Jak Marshall, who lost his father, despite bravely performing CPR on him after he collapsed in the family home.

Now every month residents are asked to nominate someone in the community who goes above and beyond to help others or improve their area.

Lee, who is pictured with Sally, said he has already confirmed his place at the next pantomime and arranged for Sally to visit Parliament.
