MP backing Scouts as they plan for jamboree

Posted onPosted on 1st Jul

Four determined Scouts — two from the 4th Mansfield Woodhouse group and two from 2nd Mansfield — have been given a boost towards their fundraising for the trip of a lifetime.

Oliver Harvie, 15, and Francesca Campbell, 16, who are Explorers with 4th Mansfield Woodhouse Scout Group, and Sam Lewing, 14, and Ava King, 13, from 2nd Mansfield Scout Group, are among 36 Nottinghamshire Scouts who will attend the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea next year.

They will join tens of thousands of other Scouts over the three weeks of the jamboree, a worldwide event that is held every four years.

Now the four need to raise £3,600 each to make the trip next summer with group, local and individual events planned.

Their fundraising was given a boost when they met Mansfield MP and Nottinghamshire County Council leader Coun Ben Bradley and Coun Sinead Anderson, to discuss the jamboree.

The two politicians made a donation towards their efforts.

Already the four Scouts have collected money from car washes, sponsored events, and other activities.

Ben said: “I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Oliver, Sam, Francesca and Ava. It is amazing to see young people so passionate about the Scouts and they are a testament to the organisation’s values.

“Raising £15,000 is a huge challenge for anybody, which is why myself and Coun Anderson were more than happy to donate some of our divisional funds towards the cause.

“I wish them the best of luck with their fundraising activities and say congratulations for being selected in the first place.

“Hopefully we will see them representing Nottinghamshire in South Korea next year.”

Oliver is a pupil at The Samworth Church Academy, Mansfield. To make a donation to Oliver’s fundraising, go to www.gofundme.com/ and search for Oliver Harvie

Sam attends The Garibaldi School, Forest Town, while Francesca is at All Saints’ Catholic Academy, Mansfield, and Ava is a pupil at The Brunts Academy, Mansfield.

A Crowdfunding page for the four Scouts is at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/mansfield-districtexplores?utm_term=JYRE5GJ23.

People who shop online can also help the four Scouts. Instead of using Google to access online shopping, they should go to Easy Fundraising — www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/samavaoliverfrancescalewing — and then enter online sites such as Amazon, B&Q, insurance companies, hotel booking sites, and thousands of others.
It does not cost anything to use and there is no extra charge, but the retailers then make a donation to the Scouts’ fundraising page.
