Making Sutton streets safer

Posted onPosted on 22nd Feb

High-definition CCTV cameras have been fitted to shops on Outram Street, Sutton, as part of an initiative to make the area’s streets safer.

In total 58 cameras will be installed on shops along Outram Street and the town centre thanks to Safer Streets Funding.

They can capture crisp images thanks to built-in lighting and will be filming 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help people feel safer while shopping and walking through the town.

The cameras are one of the projects Ashfield District Council is delivering as part of Safer Streets, a project to tackle ongoing issues with crime and anti-social behaviour in New Cross and the wider Sutton area, with a particular focus on women and girls.

Delivered by Ashfield Community Safety Partnership, including the council, police, fire service, Nottinghamshire County Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner, Safer Streets is working on projects ranging from improving street lighting to trialling safety apps to help protect women and girls.

Coun Helen-Ann Smith, cabinet member for community safety and crime reduction at the district council, said: “These cameras are fantastic and will make a real difference to Outram Street. The fact that they are running at all times and capturing high-definition images should work to make women and girls feel safer, and deter potential criminals.

“The CCTV cameras, combined with the other projects, should reassure residents that Sutton is a safer place to visit, work and live.”

Sewilicious Fabrics on Outram Street is one of the shops that had a state-of-the-art camera fitted. Owner Jenny Tindall added: “We are excited to get these cameras.

“They are going to be a huge benefit to Outram Street.

“It’s going to help with safety here, especially for women and girls who could need to use this service.”

Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Caroline Henry said: “We are pouring a huge amount of investment into extra security in Sutton thanks to Safer Streets funding.

“This is part of a joint and determined effort to prevent crime.

“Women have told us they feel safer with a strong CCTV presence.

“These cameras are being installed in areas with a high footfall to ensure local people, especially women and girls, feel protected and less fearful when walking in our public spaces.

“I thank all those businesses coming on board with this scheme.

“Your commitment and support are making a valuable difference to the safety of our communities.”
