Major Oak to feature on The One Show

Sherwood Forest’s iconic Major Oak has had its journey through the seasons captured on film by the BBC’s The One Show.

The ancient oak, which once provided shelter to Robin Hood and his Merry Men, is one of many majestic ancient oaks in Sherwood Forest Country Park, managed by Nottinghamshire County Council.

The county council’s rangers team accommodated The One Show’s cameras on four occasions over the last 12 months to record the famous tree in spring, summer, autumn and winter settings.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s Paul Cook, assistant site manager at Sherwood Forest country park, was filmed gathering acorns and tending to the management and welfare of the tree as part of the film.

A popular annual event, Seed Hunt Sunday, at Sherwood was filmed as visitors collected acorns from the Major Oak and other oak trees in the forest, and with expert guidance of the ranger team, will return back to hand over saplings to be planted in the wider Sherwood Forest.

Councillor John Knight, Committee Chairman for Culture at the council, said: “We were delighted to be able to host The One Show to capture the Major Oak at different times of the year, through the BBC Natural History Unit.

“Sherwood Forest is truly iconic, attracting around 350,000 visitors a year both locally and globally, and the Major Oak itself has been witness to so many seasons, so many generations and so many events throughout its long life. This film will help explain more about the fascinating story of the Major Oak.”

The Major Oak was named the Woodland Trust’s England Tree of the Year, following a national poll in 2014.

Subject to any last minute rescheduling, The Major Oak film is due to be broadcast this coming Thursday, November 10, at 7pm on The One Show on BBC 1.
