Major award for blog on raising child with Down’s Syndrome

A caring Sutton mum has received national recognition for raising awareness of the challenges of raising a toddler with Down’s syndrome.

Kerry-Ann Bellamy writes a blog about her 19-months-old son, Lucas, and says she wants people to see the good and the bad.

“It isn’t easy. Sometimes it can be really hard,” she explained. “It’s important to share that.

“It can be amazing. Most days are brilliant and Lucas is a loving and very happy child, who brings lots of joy to our family.

“Sharing the whole experience has been so therapeutic for me and hopefully helps others.”

Kerry-Ann, 31, writes Our Life Loving Lucas on Facebook, giving people an insight into their family life — which also includes eight-year-old Robyn, five-year-old Harry, and husband Scott, 34.

She won the newcomer accolade at the Bloody Awesome Parents (BAPS) SEND Blog Awards in Leicester.

The awards, founded by Bringing Us Together and My Family Our Needs organisations, celebrate people blogging about special educational needs and disability.

They showcase the contribution SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) bloggers make in raising awareness of additional needs, both within the SEND community and wider society.

Award organisers said Kerry-Ann was honoured for the ‘huge impact’ she has had on the Down’s syndrome community and her ‘amazing work’ raising awareness.

Kerry-Ann, of Kirkby Road, praised the help her family has received from the Nottingham Down Syndrome Support Group.

Lucas is an ambassador for Down’s syndrome through the Making Chromosomes Count organisation.

Kerry-Ann added: “Because of Lucas we’re part of a whole other community, we’ve made many friends and have so much positivity and support around us.”

Kerry-Ann received her award from television’s Gavin & Stacey star Mathew Horne.
