Lessons in recycling

As part of a new Recycle For Nottinghamshire Education project, school pupils and community groups have visited a waste facility in Mansfield.

They have found out how the county’s recycling is sorted before being sent off to be made into new things — and how they can help to improve recycling rates.

Childcare students from West Notts College were among the latest to take advantage of the free tours at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) run by Veolia, Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste management contractor.

They learnt about recycling and what can and can’t go into recycling bins.

Wayne Draycott, Nottinghamshire MRF manager, said “It’s great to have new groups visiting each week.

“We were delighted to welcome the students who will be looking after local children and helping families settle into new routines as parents.

“We have a regular issue with disposable nappies finding their way into recycling bins, which causes a lot of contamination and is a health and safety concern for our staff.

“Having groups visit who can help us make a real difference is an invaluable opportunity.”

Visits are free and include a pre-tour introduction, a short DVD, a recycling sorting activity, a tour of the facility, and, on occasions, creative and upcycling activities.

Lesley Henstock, tutor at West Notts College, said: “The tour included essential information that everyone should be aware of and it taught us so much about the importance of recycling the correct items.”

The free tours last around 45 minutes, and high-vis vests and safety hats are provided. Tours must be booked in advance, email notts [email protected] for details.
