Leisure centre team take on peaks challenge

Posted onPosted on 24th Aug

A team from Lammas Leisure Centre, Sutton, will be tackling the National Three Peaks, combined with the Yorkshire Three Peaks, in an extreme 48-hour challenge for charity.

The team from Everyone Active, the company that operates the leisure centre in partnership with Ashfield District Council, is raising funds for Dementia UK, as part of Everyone Active’s commitment to the charity this year.

General manager Tommy Fairweather, sales manager Thomas Spalding, and fitness manager Lee Moss will be taking on the six peaks, which cover the three highest UK mainland peaks, and the three highest peaks in Yorkshire, over 5th and 6th September.

Tommy, who has previously completed the six peaks as a leisurely family outing over four days, said: “We want to push ourselves. We’re doing this for charity, so it needs to really test us.”

The team will start at dawn, at 4.30am, at the base of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), which they will be aiming to summit and descend within three hours. They will then drive to Yorkshire and hopefully complete the 28-mile Yorkshire Three Peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, before the end of the day.

Then the real challenge begins as they attempt to recover for the following day, getting as much rest and food in overnight before driving to the base of Scafell Pike, ready for a 7am start. They hope to complete this peak within four hours. It’s then back into the car for the seven-hour drive to Ben Nevis, which they are aiming to finish at around 11pm.

Physical preparation for the challenge involves hitting daily step targets and strength and conditioning work in the gym.

Thomas said: “I was novice to the gym before I started working at Lammas. I now train regularly and have been walking the 3.2 miles to and from work three times a week as training for the event.”

Lee agrees and has been training nearly every day for at least an hour. He also believes mental preparation for the challenge is important.

“I’ve been working on my mental state as well as the physical, by thinking of things which will keep me motivated during the challenge,” he said.

To ensure they hit their time goals, the team’s pace during the challenge will be a fast hike, jogging the flats, and trying to descend quickly without fatiguing the legs. Above all, they need the ideal weather window.

“Wet conditions make it more challenging, with poor visibility. We’ll get it done, but it will be slower,” Tommy explained.

The team has so far raised 10 per cent of their £2,000 fundraising target, with sponsorship just getting under way. Donations can be made at: https://www.justgiving.com/page/lammas6peaks
