Veolia (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste management contractor) is encouraging residents to remember to reduce, reuse or recycle as much of their Easter waste as possible and are running two special upcycling creative sessions at the Materials Recovery Facility in Mansfield this Easter.

People in Britain love chocolate. In world league tables of per capita consumption, the UK comes joint 4th behind Switzerland, Germany and Austria. On average, each person in Britain eats approximately 9.5 kg of chocolate per year.

Chocoholics in the UK consume approximately 80 million boxed chocolate eggs at Easter, generating more than 3,000 tonnes of UK waste each year*, which could be recycled. In addition an ‘egg-straordinary’ 16 million Easter cards are sent, which are also easily recycled.

Major confectioners are now making the green switch to recyclable Easter egg packaging such as cardboard or removing the packaging all together.

On Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th, April, there will be two free sessions each day for parents/guardians and children to take part in Easter creative craft activities, reusing packaging from Easter treats.

This is open to adults and children aged over 7.

Wayne Draycott, Materials Recovery Facility Manager at Veoli,a said: “When buying Easter Eggs try to make sure as much of the packaging is recyclable, this will make it easier for everyone at home to ensure the extra waste goes into the recycling bin and not end up going to waste.”
