Flag-waving crowds are expected in Mansfield Market Place as the town says thank you to the Armed Forces — past, present, and the future.

A flypast by an iconic Lancaster bomber is set to be the highlight of the annual celebrations.

The special event, on Sunday, 30th June, will also include a military parade, live music from the second world war era, vintage army vehicles, a Top Gun flight simulator activity, free children’s activities, and much more.

The flypast is expected to be around 2pm, weather permitting, as Mansfield joins national Armed Forces Day tributes over the weekend.

Jay Rawlinson, chief executive of Mansfield BID, which is organising the event in partnership with Mansfield District Council, said: “It is one of the great days to say a big thank you to all Forces personnel — past and present — and to recognise the part they play to keep us safe.

“The last time we had this incredible display, back in 2022, it was truly amazing. Let’s make this year’s event even more spectacular.

“This day is an opportunity for the public to engage with many Armed Forces groups and associated charities, who are giving their time to be present on this important day.”

The event will start with a parade, led by Mansfield District Corps of Drums, followed by Armed Forces representatives, flag bearers, cadets, and associated charities.

Free flags will be handed to the public to wave as the parade leaves at around 10.15am from The Buttercross area, next to the library on West Gate, and makes its way down to the main event on the Market Place.

After the parade an official opening ceremony will be led by Nottinghamshire County Council’s Armed Forces champion, Coun Keith Girling, and Mansfield mayor Andy Abrahams.

As well as vintage Army vehicles on display, there will be a Top Gun flight simulator activity, a toy-making themed on the second world war, and free toy gliders

Live music from the 1940s era will see vocal harmony trio The Bluebird Belles and Rat Pack-style singer Darren Newbould entertain.

Groups who have been invited to attend the event include: Help for Heroes, HMS Sherwood, Royal Navy Reserves, Royal British Legion, Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force, Royal Air Force, Grenadier Guards, The Mercian Regiment TAs, Mansfield Sea Cadets, Scouts and Guides.

Jay added: “Every year we try to encourage people to watch the parade as it goes down West Gate. This is quite emotional and we have 1,000 flags for people to pick up from our stall on the Market Place and from the BID team.

“Afterwards, why not stroll around the food and craft market stalls and enjoy lots of things to see and do. Please support the Armed Forces and enjoy a free, fun day out in Mansfield town centre.”

The event is being organised by Mansfield BID on behalf of the town centre businesses and supported by Mansfield District Council.
