‘Join me on the Cancer Research volunteers team’

Posted onPosted on 27th Mar

A caring Ravenshead man is urging others to become a volunteer for Cancer Research UK and help to raise funds for the charity.

For several years Mike Farley took on challenges in memory of his wife, Carol (Cazi), who died from secondary breast cancer.

His Shine 4 Cazi efforts raised more than £61,000 to support the charity Research UK in its vital research.

Having taken part in many Cancer Research UK events, in 2019 he joined the charity’s events team.

“I have never looked back,” he said. “I am an event assistant/lead event volunteer with the charity and have now supported more than 80 Race for Life, Pretty Muddy, and Shine Walk events, usually taking on the role of start/stage manager, and/or finish manager at events across the country

“It’s incredible being part of the team and I would love more people to join us as one of our amazing volunteers.

“Every year, Cancer Research UK supporters across the UK raise millions of pounds to help beat cancer by taking part in events like Race for Life, Pretty Muddy, Shine Night Walks, and Big Hikes. But they couldn’t cross the finish line without the passion and energy of an amazing team.”

Now Mike, who thanked everyone for supporting him in the past, is urging others to become volunteers.

He added: “Whether they’re cheering on participants or handing out medals at the finish line, their support makes our events possible.

“The role of an event volunteer is varied and exciting. They get involved in all aspects of the day.

“No two event days are the same, so whether you fancy marshalling in the countryside for Big Hike, supporting Race for Life or Pretty Muddy events at iconic venues, or lighting up the city streets at one of our Shine Night Walks, we’ll find the right activity for you.

“Every hour you give will help to bring us one step closer to a world where people live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.

“Our events volunteers say they love their time with us because it makes them feel part of a community.

They meet new people, form new friendships, and become part of a movement of people passionate about beating cancer

“Please think about joining us in 2025 and help make a difference. Come on your own or join in with friends and family or if you are part of a community group looking for a fun event to do together, how about helping us out.

“Everyone is welcome, and we guarantee you’ll end the day smiling. We’ll bring the foam fingers, music, and medals — you bring the energy and your best cheers for the finish line”.
