Italian driving challenge was just the job!

Posted onPosted on 1st Nov

Motoring fundraisers Maldwyn and Karen Johnson (pictured right) conquered a driving challenge in Italy — raising £685 for a children’s charity, so far.

They joined 49 other Minis for the The Italian Job Navigational Charity Challenge, which was launched in 1990 after organisers were inspired by famous film The Italian Job.

Over nine days, they drove their Cooper S convertible through northern Italy, from Imola to Turin — with no maps, GPS or satnav.

Karen said: “We inally mastered use of the Tulip Roadbook — a non-competitive, rally-style navigation handbook — plus daily timed special stages. What an experience!”

The challenge started as the 50 Minis boarded LeShuttle at the Channel Tunnel to the sound of The Italian Job being played over speakers.

Karen, a former president of Mansfield Rotary, said: “Most days we were up and off for a 7.30am start, a full day of driving — up to 120 miles a day — with timed stages every day that incurred penalty points.

“On the first couple of days we were collecting them like they were going out of fashion!

“But after day 3 we cracked it and in the end finished well up the leaderboard.

“We had some great experiences along the way, including driving two laps of the F1 racing circuit at Imola, and visiting vineyards and a balsamic vinegar producer.

“On the last day we drove through Turin escorted by police, with locals lining the streets, horns blasting and flags waving.

“It was a fantastic finish to a brilliant experience.”

The couple were raising money for Chances for Children – Buttle UK, which helps disadvantaged young people in serious need — and money raised will be spent locally.

The charity provides, for example, beds, books, and school uniforms to help children get the best chance in life.
