How SuDS will benefit wildlife across Mansfield

Posted onPosted on 21st Feb

More than 280 sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) have been installed across Mansfield as Severn Trent’s flood resilience project in the town comes to an end.

It said plants have been cut back and the SuDS tidied over winter to allow flowers to bloom as we head into spring.

A spokesperson said that while the SuDS may look a little bare now, they will be in full bloom by spring and provide lots of colour throughout summer. They’re also important for wildlife and will be full of bees and birds in warmer months.

Severn Trent has worked with landscaping experts, who researched the best type of flowers to use at different SuDS locations.

Adam Boucher, project lead for Mansfield Green Recovery, said: “As well as providing a drainage and flood reduction function for our streets, these beautiful interventions are easy to maintain, helping them look good for us and providing real benefits for the environment and wildlife, all year round.

“While we’re coming to the end of the project, we’re still working hard to complete as many SuDS as possible.

“You’ll still see fencing up around some of them after we have finished to ensure the grass, seeds, and plants can establish themselves, to give them the best chance of survival.”

All plants are either native or regular species that you would see in a garden setting. and some examples can be seen at the SuDS across Mansfield here.
