An Ashfield District Council officer who fought back from a serious injury that left him with a 50/50 chance of walking again has won an inspiration award.

Matthew Pinning, principal officer responsive and voids, who had to change his career path because of the injury, won the Inspirational Colleague of the Year award at the 2021 Housing Heroes awards, held by the Chartered Institute of Housing.

Coun Tom Hollis, cabinet member for council and social housing, said: “Matthew’s story is one of courage and inspiration. He has turned a disastrous and life-changing position into a promising new career and is now aiding others to do the same.

“We are proud of him and how he is inspiring others in a similar position to not let their disabilities hinder career prospects or their self-esteem.”
