Help Ashfield MP win paw-litical race for Westminster crown

Posted onPosted on 6th Oct

An MP who gave West Highland White Terrier Alfie a new home after his owner was no longer able to look after him properly needs your help to be Parliament’s top dog.

Lee Anderson, MP for Ashfield, and Alfie are competing against other politicians and their pets to win the title of Westminster Dog of the Year 2021, a competition organised jointly by Dogs Trust and the Kennel Club.

The event focuses on promoting responsible dog ownership and encourages an open dialogue on dog welfare issues, as well as providing an opportunity for MPs to meet with experts to discuss all aspects of the canine world.

Lee  said when Alfie was 11 years-old his owner could no longer look after him properly and put him up for adoption.

“We adopted him because we knew the owner and had taken Alfie for walks as the owner’s health got worse. We always wanted a rescue dog, and this happened at the right time for us and Alfie,” he added.

“He makes us very happy and he now has a forever home. Alfie’s story lets people know a dog is never too old to adopt.

“Alfie is my biggest supporter and a part of the family. He deserves the centre stage after all of his years of loyalty and service on the ‘paw-litical’ trail. He will always be a winner to me and has garnered quite a fan base when joining me out canvassing in Ashfield.

“Westminster Dog of the Year is not only a fun event to be involved in but also provides a great opportunity to highlight the importance of responsible dog ownership and the work MPs are doing to improve dog welfare.”
