Guiding volunteers rewarded

Posted onPosted on 28th Oct

The commitment and achievements of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire adult volunteers was honoured at a tea party at Portland College, Mansfield.

County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst presented awards to more than 40 members and friends of Girlguiding in Nottinghamshire.

From Ashfield Division, Claire Sharman, leader with 1st Kirkby Guides, accepted her 40-year long service award. She was followed on to the stage by Mansfield Division’s Helen Oates (30-year long service award), Julie Patman (Oak Leaf) and Jean Howkins (Nottinghamshire Star).

Rainworth Brownie Leader and former Mansfield Division Commissioner Sarah Clarkson was presented with a Good Service badge and there was special applause for Blidworth’s Laila Elson, the county’s latest Queen’s Guide.

The busy afternoon of presentations included many long service awards — representing a total of 600 years of service — together with Oak Leaf Awards to 20 Leaders and the Nottinghamshire Star to three non-uniformed volunteers, in recognition of their outstanding support for local Guiding.

Jackie also gave out personal Thanks badges, County Brooches and Good Service awards to individuals who have enriched the Guiding experience for girls across the county over the last year.

“Helping thousands of Notts youngsters get the most out of life is rewarding in so many ways,” Jackie said.

“Of course, Girlguiding Nottinghamshire’s adult volunteers benefit enormously from the training, mentoring and experience we offer. But, as we’ve shown at this afternoon’s tea party, we also have great fun as well!”
